“Garden of BE Art Exhibition, Call for Entries”

PU’UNENE, MAUI, August, 2011 --- Recycled plastic is the focus for the Garden of BE Art Exhibition, presented by Community Work Program.  Organizers will receive work from artists on, September 10, 2011, 10 am-3 pm at the historic ‘Iao Theater , 68 N. Market Street, Wailuku.  Artists of all ages and abilities are encouraged to enter this competition that continues our mission to focus attention on the needs of our environment – this time in a plastic world.

Artists are asked to use their creative gifts to unlock the endless variety of plants, flowers, vines, birds, animals and insects calling to be unlocked from discarded plastics.  All entries must be made from reused plastic. Wire, glue, tape, paint are allowed to assemble and enhance the plastic containers and materials.

Entries will be judged by Tess Cartwright, founder of the Garden of BE exhibition and author of The Garden of BE musical stage play and Robert Glick, Graphic Designer and award winning Maui Artist. Entry is open to anyone.  Four Judging categories include: “Under 13 years of age”, “13-18,” “18 and over”, and “Best Group Entry.”  Points will be awarded for creativity in the diversity of textures, types, and colors of plastics.

1st-3rd place will be awarded prizes donated by Maui businesses at the opening of the exhibition entitled “A Night in the Garden of BE” held at the ‘Iao Theater to benefit the non-profit Maui OnStage.  The events is open to the public, and on that night the “People’s Choice Award” will be voted on and awarded.

For entry forms, please visit any Maui Public Library or call Community Work Day Program at 877-2524.  For questions about judging criteria, call the exhibition’s coordinator – Wilma Nakamura (808) 573-3911.  Nakamura is also the coordinator of the annual “Art of Trash” exhibition.
