In the early 1980s I earned a living drawing caricatures of guests aboard the Captain Cook Cruise Boat on the Big Island of Hawaii. The image below is a collection of photos taken aboard the Captain Cook that depicts some of my work and folks that allowed me to sketch them. The boat departed Kailua-Kona at 8:00AM moving up the shoreline to Kealakakua Bay where folks could snorkel, swim and enjoy the sights before returning to the dock arriving about 1:00PM. I then walked to the nearby Don Drysdale oceanfront restaurant and Bar to continue this fun way to pay the bills.
I obtained my state of Hawaii real estate sales license in 1981 and balanced listing and selling real estate with drawing caricatures. I'm still in the real estate business, but not drawing caricatures. Both the Captain Cook Boat and Don Drysdale's establishment are now only fond memories in the hearts and minds of those who loved them.
